Roadworthiness inspection in Luxembourg

The roadworthiness inspection is a mandatory step to ensure a vehicle remains safe, compliant, and fit to drive. This page summarizes the essentials: when the inspection is required, how to prepare, which documents to bring, how a re-test works, and where to book an appointment. You will also find the list of SNCT stations in Luxembourg.

When do you need to take the roadworthiness inspection?

For cars (≤ 3.5 t), motorcycles, and trailers (750 kg to 3.5 t), the standard schedule is:

  • 1st inspection: 4 years after first registration
  • 2nd inspection: 6 years after first registration
  • then: every year

Please note: some vehicles (e.g., taxis, vans/light commercial vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, etc.) have specific rules.

What is checked during the inspection

The inspection typically covers:

  • vehicle identification (VIN, license plates),
  • emissions/noise,
  • braking system,
  • lighting and electrical equipment,
  • tires/wheels/suspension,
  • chassis,
  • seat belts,
  • steering and visibility.

Documents to bring (avoid being turned away)

The required documents may vary depending on the situation, but the typical essentials include:

  • registration document,
  • last inspection certificate (if available),
  • valid insurance certificate,
  • tax sticker (if applicable),
  • COC (Certificate of Conformity), if available,
  • documents related to any modifications (wheels/tires, suspension, etc.).

Prepare your vehicle before the appointment

Without going into mechanical details, a few simple checks help avoid many re-tests:

  • tires: pressure + wear (common reference: minimum 1.6 mm),
  • lighting: headlights, indicators, brake lights,
  • wipers / washer fluid + visibility:
  • seat belts: (proper operation),
  • warning triangle + safety vest: (and, more generally, present the vehicle clean and easily accessible).

Result, defects, and re-test

If the vehicle is rejected for non-compliance, a temporary certificate may be issued and you will need to correct the issues and return for a follow-up inspection within the indicated timeframe (often a few weeks, depending on the case).
