Skoda Kamiq
Since its arrival in 2020, the Skoda Kamiq has rapidly become the brand's best-seller in France. Although this little SUV isn't worrying the top of the sales charts, its success is enough for Skoda to evolve its range and introduce some interesting innovations. Here's a detailed look at the features and improvements of this popular model.
Goodbye Diesel, hello G-Tec
One of the major changes in the Kamiq range is the abolition of diesel. As a replacement, Skoda has introduced a G-Tec version fuelled by natural gas. This eco-friendly version demonstrates the brand's commitment to offering greener solutions and meeting growing environmental demands. Since last year, the Kamiq also offers a new version of its 1.0 TSI engine, now called EVO. Although this engine has lost six bhp as a result of the pollution control process to meet Euro 6D-Full standards, it still develops 110 bhp, without significantly altering its performance.
A new Scoutline finish
Another notable new feature is the introduction of the Scoutline trim level. This version features black plastic protectors around the wheel arches, as well as silver-tinted mirror caps and lower bumper panels. Unlike the more robust 'Scout' versions, the Scoutline offers neither all-wheel drive nor increased ground clearance. Instead, it makes do with a slightly more adventurous look. Wood veneer throughout the dashboard and special upholstery in breathable ThermoFlux fabric add a touch of refinement to the interior.
Behind the wheel, the Skoda Kamiq 1.0 TSI EVO 110 impresses with its driving pleasure. The controls are smooth and the engine is always available, offering remarkable driving comfort thanks to its hydraulic silentblocks securing the single rear axle. This solution, which is both economical and effective, ensures excellent vibration filtration, contributing to the overall comfort of the vehicle.
During our test drive, the model equipped with the DSG7 transmission showed an ability to smooth out the slight dip at low revs observed on the previous 116bhp version. The dual-clutch gearbox, although often in too much of a hurry to change gear to optimise fuel consumption, knows how to downshift quickly to deliver the necessary power. This allows the Kamiq to remain responsive and efficient in all circumstances.
Consumption and Economy
In terms of fuel consumption, the Kamiq 1.0 TSI EVO 110 has average figures. During our test drive, it never consumed less than 7.5 litres/100 km, and more than 8 litres/100 km on the motorway. These results are partly due to the absence of modern technologies such as micro-hybridisation or cylinder deactivation. However, the Kamiq is not designed for dynamic performance, but rather for comfort and practicality, in line with Skoda's philosophy.
The interior of the Kamiq is well built and seriously presented. Despite its compact size, it offers generous space, especially in the second row. The 380-litre boot, which can be extended to 1,395 litres with the rear seats folded down, adds another layer of practicality. However, to enjoy a flat floor, the optional adjustable boot floor is essential. These practical aspects are reinforced by a host of little touches that make everyday life easier.
