Registering your car in Luxembourg: The complete guide

Applying for a new registration number

Have you just moved to Luxembourg and need to register your vehicle? Don't panic, the procedures are simple and well organised. Here's a complete guide to help you.

Once you have settled in Luxembourg, you have six months in which to register your car. The first step is to apply for a new registration number, a procedure you can carry out online via MyGuichet. If you wish, you can also opt for a personalised registration number.

Opt for a personalised plaque

Personalised number plates are very popular in Luxembourg. Unlike regular serial numbers, which are linked to vehicles, personalised plates are reserved for the owner. They add a unique touch to your vehicle and are easier to remember. To obtain a personalised plate, you will need to check the availability of the desired number on MyGuichet. The cost is €50 for the first time and €24 if the same holder uses it again. Please note that there may be a long wait for certain numbers that are in high demand.

Registering your car: steps and documents required

The Luxembourg Ministry of Transport has entrusted the Société Nationale de Circulation Automobile (SNCA) with the organisation of vehicle registration. Once you have registered your application on MyGuichet and received your registration number, you will need to download and complete the application form to obtain a registration certificate.

To submit your application to the SNCA, you need to provide a number of essential documents:

  • The application form for a vehicle registration certificate, completed and signed
  • A copy of an identity document
  • The vehicle invoice document
  • Insurance certificate issued by an insurance company approved in Luxembourg
  • Customs document (705 sticker) Valid roadworthiness certificate
  • The European certificate of conformity for vehicles registered after 1 February 2016
  • The foreign registration document
  • A €50 "droit de chancellerie" tax stamp An additional €50 stamp if you have chosen a personalised number

Your complete administrative file must be sent by post or handed in at the SNCA reception desk. You can also book an appointment online to simplify the process.

Insuring your vehicle

Before you can register your vehicle, you must insure it with an insurance company approved in Luxembourg. The insurance certificate is one of the documents you need to provide with your registration file. Making your number plates Once your registration certificate has been issued, all you need to do is make your new number plates. You must order them from an approved manufacturer, a list of which can be found on the SNCA website.

Registering your car in Luxembourg may seem tedious, but by following these steps and preparing all the necessary documents, you can make the process simple and efficient. Whether you choose a number from the current series or a personalised plate, don't forget to check all the requirements and plan ahead to make the most of your vehicle in your new country of residence.
