How do you prepare your car for winter?

When winter arrives, so does the irresistible urge to hurtle down the snow-covered slopes of ski resorts. However, before you can enjoy the snow, it's crucial to prepare your car to cope with the extreme winter conditions and guarantee your safety on the road. Here are a few tips on how to prepare your vehicle before heading off to the mountains.

Vehicle maintenance

The first step in preparing your car for winter is to carry out a full service. Winter conditions can put your car to the test, so it's important to check a few essentials. Make sure the brakes are in perfect condition, as they will be put under extra strain on slippery roads. Precise power steering is also crucial for navigating snow-covered and winding roads. What's more, a good heating system is essential not only for your comfort, but also to defrost and demist the windows. Consider changing the engine oil if it's old, as fresh oil works better at low temperatures. Finally, check that all the bulbs in the headlights and lights are working properly, and replace any faulty bulbs to ensure good visibility.

Ski transport

Transporting skis can be a challenge, especially if you have a lot of luggage. You have several options for this. If space allows, you can carry them inside the car, although this limits the space for the rest of the luggage. A more practical and economical solution is to use roof racks, which free up interior space. Alternatively, a roof box specially designed to carry skis is a safe and practical option. Whichever option you choose, always check that the installation is secure before you set off.

Tyres

Tyres are a key factor in winter safety. It's crucial to choose the right type of tyres and check their condition. Snow tyres offer better grip and traction on snow and ice, and are ideal for regular winter use. Snow chains offer excellent traction in heavy snow conditions, although they can be tricky to fit. Snow socks, which are simpler to install than chains, are suitable for occasional use on moderate snow-covered roads. Make sure you comply with local regulations on winter tyres. In certain mountainous regions of France, it is compulsory to fit your vehicle with winter tyres or to have chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March. Familiarise yourself with the specific rules of each region you pass through to avoid fines and ensure your safety.

Other factors to consider

Batteries

Cold temperatures can weaken your car battery. Check its condition before you set off. If it's more than five years old or shows signs of weakness, consider replacing it. It's also a good idea to take a battery charger with you in case of emergency.

Suitable liquids

Use antifreeze coolants and windscreen washers that can withstand freezing temperatures (down to -30°C). Make sure you have enough before setting off.

Equipment and safety

It's vital to have safety equipment in case of bad weather or breakdowns. A snow scraper is essential for de-icing the windscreen. A shovel is useful for clearing snow from around the wheels. A torch can be very useful for night work. An anti-puncture kit is essential for repairing punctures in an emergency. Carry warm blankets to keep you warm if you have to wait a long time, and a first-aid kit to cover all eventualities.

When loading your car, take care to distribute the weight evenly. Correctly distributed luggage improves the vehicle's stability and minimises the risk of it becoming unbalanced on snow-covered roads. By preparing your car carefully for winter, you can ensure not only your safety but also that of your passengers. A complete overhaul, the right equipment and a well-balanced load are essential to cope with winter conditions and make the most of your skiing holiday.
