Changes to new car premiums

The Luxembourg government has updated the mobility climate bonus from 01 October 2024. The bonus for the purchase of a new 100 % electric car is now up to a maximum of 6,000 euros8,000 previously. This aid will apply to vehicles consuming less than 16 kWh/100 km. For those whose consumption is between 16 and 18 kWh/100 kmthe premium will be reduced to 3,000 euros.

A word of warning: vehicles consuming more than 18 kWh/100 km are no longer eligible for this aid, with the exception of large families (with at least three children), who will still be able to benefit from a grant of 6,000 euros.

In addition, the minimum holding period for the vehicle has been extended to three yearsto avoid rapid resales.

New for used vehicles

Another advance concerns used electric vehicles. From now on, a 1,500 euros will be granted for the purchase of electric cars more than three years old. However, this aid is subject to certain conditions, including ownership of the vehicle for at least two years and the fact that the buyer must not be from the same household as the seller.

In May last year, the used electric car market accounted for 10.6 % of adverts according to data from Luxauto.lu - Luxembourg's leading platform for buying and selling vehicles - a significant increase on previous years.

Encouraging soft mobility: focus on cargo bikes

In addition to electric vehicles, the government is continuing to promote the soft mobilityparticularly through aid for the purchase of cargo bikes.
