Study of the second-hand market in Luxembourg

From 3 to 15 June, the country's dealers brought to life the latest edition of the AutoOccasiounsFestival, dedicated to second-hand cars. In collaboration with ACL, using Luxauto.lu data, ACL was able to analyse trends in the second-hand market. In terms of volume, this market is larger than the new car market.

Second-hand market: What can we expect?

The twelfth edition of the AutoOccasiounsFestival, the little brother of the Autofestival, will take place from 3 to 15 June. In Luxembourg, the second-hand market remains an important one for dealers and motorists alike. In fact, for several years now, the volume of second-hand cars has been higher than that of new cars. Last year, 58,806 second-hand cars were registered, compared with 49,155 new cars.

There are many advantages to buying used, from price to lead times, compared with new. To get an idea of the current market, take a look at the 31,692 cars advertised on the Luxauto.lu from 2024 until the beginning of May. As in the case of new vehicles, Volkswagen is the most popular brand, with 17 % of the ads, or 5,379 cars offered for sale. As the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer has topped the sales charts in Luxembourg for many years, it's quite normal to find it in this position.
Next come Audi (10.4 %), BMW (8.2 %), Mercedes (7.2 %), Skoda (6.4 %), Porsche (4.3 %), Ford (3.6 %), Hyundai (3.5 %), Peugeot (3.5 %) and Seat, also with 3.5 %.

An announced price increase

In 2020, the average price of used cars on the Luxauto.lu was 26,313.55 euros. At the beginning of May, it was 37,899.05 euros. This rise can be explained by a number of factors. In the wake of the health crisis and tensions over semi-conductor production, delivery times for new cars have been very long, forcing some motorists to turn to the second-hand market for quick access to a vehicle. Increased demand has therefore pushed up prices. What's more, new car prices have also risen, driven by the electrification of models. Mechanically, used car prices have followed suit.

Mileage down, 10 % of offers are electrified

On the other hand, again based on Luxauto.luThe average mileage of cars advertised is 50,813 km. This compares with 56,435 km in 2020 and 64,417 km in 2022.

In terms of engines, the majority of adverts were for combustion engines. At the beginning of May, 18,789 ads were for petrol cars and 9,772 for diesel cars. It's worth noting that electrification is slowly beginning to emerge on the second-hand market. Also on the Luxauto.luAt the beginning of May, there were 1,274 electric cars and 2,094 hybrids for sale, representing 10.6 % of listings. Just two years ago, only 644 electric cars and 2,182 hybrids were listed on the digital platform.

To give a boost to electrified models on the second-hand market, the House of Automobile is calling for the introduction of an incentive for the purchase of a second-hand electrified vehicle, as is still the case for new models.
